Obituary for James Calvert (Jim) Anderson

James C. Anderson

James Calvert (Jim) Anderson of Princeton died at 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 3, 2019, at the TriStar Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, of complications following a stroke on October 31. Jim was born on September 19, 1936, in New Albany, Indiana, as the first child of Calvert Tronson Anderson and Pauline Chambers Anderson. The family moved to Princeton, where Jim spent his junior and senior years at Butler High School, graduating in 1954. In 1956, his time with the United States Army took him, among other places, to Whittier, Alaska, as part of the 867th AAA Battalion.

Also in 1956, Jim married his high-school sweetheart Geralene Scott, and once the couple resettled in Princeton following Jim’s Army tour, he eventually established his own appliance repair business, from which he retired (nominally at least) in 1998. He was an active member of Ogden Memorial United Methodist Church, and during summers, he always looked forward to traveling to the North Carolina mountains, where he regularly attended the Methodist lay conferences at Lake Junaluska. To the very end, Jim loved taking on odd jobs around the house, mowing his own lawn, and still responding to the occasional service call for his friends. Through hard-won experience, creativity, and sheer perseverance, he could fix almost anything. To his family, particularly to his son Chris, he gave the gift of modeling how to work — with patience, consistency, thoroughness, and quiet compassion for others. By his generous spirit he taught his son to be a dad.

Jim’s unchallenged source of pride was his only granddaughter Erica, on whom he lavished attention, encouragement, and love during the last sixteen years of his life, and the first sixteen of hers. For her he built a beautiful dollhouse as well as another house for her dog, Dixie. He helped her take her first steps and bought her first tricycle. During his last years, Jim loved to teach her how to drive his pickup truck on the country roads around Princeton. To her grandad, Erica was the ultimate little girl, the apple of his eye. No one who talked with him could have escaped a report on her current comings and goings.

Jim Anderson is survived by his sister Linda Anderson Peters of Dawson Springs; his brother Rocky Anderson and wife Jeannie, of Princeton; several nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, and grand-nieces. Also surviving are Jim’s wife Geralene (Princeton), with whom he shared sixty-three years of marriage; their son Christopher and wife Lisa, their daughter Erica, and the family dog Dixie, all of Richardson, Texas.

By living with him, Jim’s family was gifted a pattern of life that prepared them to live without him. To both friends and family, the world was made a better place for his having been in it.

Visitation will be from 11:30 to 2:00 PM at Ogden United Methodist Church on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 with graveside services to be held Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at 2:30 PM at Creekmur Cemetery with Rev. Shelley Caulder officiating with burial to follow in the Creekmur Cemetery.
